Resolutions and Blogging Aren’t Really My Thing

But I’m trying them on for size, anyway. It made the most sense as a way to jump start this solo non-profit baking journey idea I’ve had in mind for the last year and a half, but wasn’t quite sure about how to bring it to life. As someone who is used to following the rules and a ‘path-to-success’ that’s already been mapped out – whether it be because I’m a product of the school systems here in the United States, corporate culture’s linear growth structure, or society tells us that certain careers are more likely to bring us stability – it’s been a challenge to figure out exactly how to go from dreaming of starting a business, to actually making one happen.

Sure, I’ve done a bunch of research on how to potentially start a business in Maryland. Research about what foods are permissible to sell under the Cottage Food Business Law, whether or not I technically need to be registered as an LLC, what farmers markets are around (and there are a LOT, all throughout the week, too!), and I’ve even been honing in on some of my favorite recipes to make sure they’re market worthy. But once that’s all said and done, the only thing left is to just do it.

The Canadian artist, Douglas Coupland once said, “The more you want something to happen, the harder it becomes.” This has been true, at least in my case, due to the fear of falling short of my own expectations, but I think there is something to be said for needing to do things your own way in order to get them done. What that looks like for me is following a moral code that is often overlooked in an age of convenience, cellophane, and consumerism.

I’ve always really admired businesses that go the extra mile to use compostable or reusable items instead of single-use plastics, source their ingredients from as many local businesses as possible, and make the effort to be a part of their community. These are just a few tenets I want to commit to as I embark on the journey of starting my own business, because too many businesses out there forego these completely doable things.

My goal is for Baked for the Better to serve as a passion project, through which I can give back, because it feels like my responsibility as a part of this community to do that, and bring people together under one common cause through the sweet things life has to offer.

So here’s to first attempts, stepping into the dark, and not being afraid of breathing life into dreams. Because you never know what light may be on the other side.
